The Isle of Man Sub-Aqua club was founded in 1958 and is the oldest club on the Island. We are a member of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BS-AC No. 76). The club owns two rigid inflatable boats ("Manannan" and "Jaffa!", the latter was bought second hand with the name already registered, honest!) which are used regularly to dive on all parts of the Isle of Man and the Calf of Man. More experienced dives are also carried out in the deeper surrounding waters, usually on wrecks. The club dives every Tuesday, Friday (Dive leaders and above) and Sunday. Additional dives are run during the summer on Saturday either for training or deeper wreck dives. The club meets every Friday at the QuarterBridge pub (about 9.00pm) to get together and occasionally have lectures. Social events are held frequently and include Christmas parties, Boxing day brick hunts (somebody chucks bricks in and divers go down and fetch them, bricks are numbered with each number corresponding to a prize), beach barbecues and trips to the Calf of Man. We also own a historic site - the wreck of the Racehorse. Let me visit: Map of the Island and some dive descriptions. (Map only available at the moment) Planning a trip to the Isle of Man (inc. dive shops). Useful links: This is the site for DIVER Magazine. It is a well designed site with loads of useful info, several forums and many links to related sites. If you are at all interested in diving make sure you visit this site. Medical advice for divers on most problems and on DCS. Loads of other info as well and the option to purchase various bit of medical equipment e.g. medipacs to take on liveaboard trips. The Britannic weighed 50 000 tonnes, and was 260m long, 29m wide and 18m deep. She was acting as a hospital ship when she hit a mine on November 21st, 1916. Today she lies at a depth of 120m and is visited by very few. She was first dived by Jacques Cousteau in 1970 and was dived in 1997, see the results at this site. The Isle of Man is one of the few places which basking sharks still visit, after being hunted in many other locations. Basking sharks are some of the biggest creatures alive and are a wonderful sight to see. This link will take you to the website of the Isle of Man Basking Shark project, the only project of its type in the world as basking sharks are now extinct in the areas where other projects existed.
